Visualisation Attempt 1 (kind of!)

So I kind of cheated with my first attempt. I’m a big fan of Dear Data, so I recently purchased the Observe, Collect and Draw! Visual Journey. I choose a simple visualisation, ‘What My Camera Sees’ – reviewing 160 photos from a set period and detailing the content.

I deliberately choose my recent holiday (as I haven’t been able to leave Hong Kong for three years) and went from there. Straight away, there’s some manipulation on my part. Why didn’t I start today and go back? Are the last 160 photos in my camera roll too dull? The second thing I noticed was that it was quite challenging to fit into someone’s narrative. I perhaps wouldn’t have chosen the same categories, and what I produced didn’t necessarily feel authentic to me, more like going through the motions with someone else’s idea. There are some interesting parallels to our previous discussions on raw data and how we collect, interpret and analyse. The task was fun, but I’m sure the experience will be different following my agenda!
